For many generations, families have used the ancient art of embalming to care for their deceased loved ones. Embalming is a process of preserving the human body so as to delay decomposition. The process essentially involves replacing a person’s blood with embalming fluid, which firms up the skin and smooths it out. This method of preserving a loved one, enables friends and families to have a last view throughout the wake, irrespective of the number of days it spans. Whilst we now use more advanced methods, the idea behind it remains the same, to respect and cleanse the body as well as to add a warmer, safer touch as friends and relatives pay the deceased their last respects.
At Solace (安祥殡葬礼仪), all embalming work is done by professional embalmers, trained in the latest embalming methods. Better still, embalming services is included as standard in all our funeral packages.
Why Should You Embalm?
Some people prefer to not have the body embalmed as it does not align with their religious or personal beliefs. A body does not require embalming if the funeral is held soon after death, for example, a same day funeral. However, if there are loved ones travelling from out of town and you require the funeral to be deferred, you will want to consider getting the body embalmed.
In such cases, families are often concerned about the duration in which the body can be kept after death. Typically, an embalmed body can be kept in its original condition for one week, before decomposition starts taking place.
As Singapore is hot and humidity is extremely high, embalming the body is most advisable, especially if the family prefers an open casket wake for better viewing. This can help ensure hygiene is maintained and bacteria does not spread.
Furthermore, if you prefer to have mortician makeup, embalming is required as un-embalmed tissue is too soft to make up properly.
When Considering Embalming…
A few conditions should be considered before embalming a body:
- The condition of the deceased’s body
- The cause of death
- How long the person has departed
- Medication that the deceased last ingested
- Environmental conditions
In addition, it must be noted that all bodies deteriorate at various rates depending on the aforementioned factors. An experienced Funeral Director will be able to provide a proper time estimate, considering all aspects, so that bereaved family members can make a more well-informed decision on whether to embalm. Relying on refrigeration will not prevent the body from desiccation, but merely delays the process.
When is Embalming Required?
If the you intend to conduct a wake, it is best to have the body embalmed, for hygiene purposes, as friends and family will visit to pay their last respects. If it is an immediate burial, the body will most likely be refrigerated and embalming is not required. If the deceased is to be cremated, depending on the day of the cremation, the remains may either be refrigerated or embalmed.
As there are various aspects to consider in the process of embalming, consulting an experienced Funeral undertaker, concurrent to planning the funeral, would be advisable. However, the decision ultimately lies in you, the deceased’s family member’s hands.
Alternatives to Embalming
It is worth noting that the law does not mandate embalming, even if you intend to hold a funeral wake. As an alternative, your loved one’s body may be placed in a hermetically sealed (ie airtight) casket and kept for up to 7 days.
For wakes above 7 days, written approval must be obtained from the Director-General Public Health, regardless of whether your loved one’s body is embalmed or not.
